Base Currency

The first currency in a pair — the one you buy or sell.

The base currency is the first currency listed in a pair and the one the price refers to. Buying a pair means buying the base currency and selling the quote currency; the quoted price tells you how much quote currency one unit of the base costs.

Example

In EUR/USD, the euro (EUR) is the base currency.
